making astronomy accessible to all

Everyone is welcome at Mid-Kent Astronomical Society

Members of the public can visit the society at either the public meetings or the public Observing events.

Everyone of all ages and levels of expertise is welcome, including complete beginners.

Children (under 18s) are also welcome, when accompanied by an adult.

Please dress appropriately for the weather, and be ready for observing, if it is clear. Remember that it can get very cold, especially in winter, so bring several layers or your warmest winter coat, as you feel appropriate.

Public meetings to listen to our interesting talks
Public meetings are held on the second and last Friday of each month, except August and at Christmas, when there are no meetings. Meetings normally start at 7.45pm for 8pm.
There is a small entrance fee for each meeting. This contributes towards our costs for room hire and speaker expenses. Free refreshments are provided.

At every meeting, we run Telescope workshops for those who bring along their telescopes and need some assistance with setting it up. This is a free service.

All Public meetings are held at Bredhurst Village Hall unless otherwise stated.
See the EVENTS page for details of our forthcoming public meetings.

Public Observing evenings at our Observatory
On the Fridays when we do not hold our public meetings at Bredhurst, and depending on the weather, we open our James Irwin Observatory in Canterbury for those who wish to do some observing using our large telescope.

We first meet at the Victoria Hotel from 8pm (Oct-Mar) / 8.30pm (Apr-Sep), and people are then escorted to the Observatory 30 minutes later.

Please check below or on the HOME page on the day, to ensure that we are open for observing, as this is highly dependent on the weather and personnel.

The James Irwin Observatory is
Currently Closed
and Due to Reopen

on 16th November 2018
