La Palma 2008

As the weather turned dull, and the summer doldrums set in 4 intrepid MKAS members headed south to La Palma to see what the stars look like from un-sullied skies Here is a brief taste of what they saw:

Faithfull Caddy takes a break

The sun setting into the Atlantic Ocean, astronomers set up for a night’s viewing by the edge of the road at the Roques de los Muchachos perched on the top of the Caldera on La Palma.

Image

The moon followed the Sun to the sea and Venus Mercury and Mars became clearly visible hanging above the last vestige of daytime cloud.

Image

Darkness fell and Jupiter shone brilliantly from Sagittarius as the Galactic core blazed illuminating the Milky Way

Image

The Cygnus Rift was emblazoned across the summer triangle like the smoke from a fire that would never be put out (or was it just the after effects of the chilli concarne at lunch).

What else did they see and do?  Watch this space and find out as they finish poring over the photo’s and print some for us all to see....
